Kennedy Woods Prairie/Savanna Project
The oak savanna is located near the south end of the west edge of Forest
Park, St. Louis, between Kennedy Woods and Skinker Blvd. The area was formerly
much like the rest of the park: a simple grassy area that was regularly
mowed. The objective of the restoration project is to reestablish a diversity
of native plant species in this area. Hopefully this will have the additional
benefit of attracting birds and butterflies which don't normally inhabit
the park.
In May 1999 a group of volunteers sowed seeds of native Missouri prairie
plants into the restoration area. As the native plants take hold, the area
is becoming more beautiful, and more interesting.
